Description

Sexuality as a method of healing in Chinese Medicine

“Those who understand the nature of sexuality will nurture their vigor and prolong their life. Those who treat its principle with contempt will injure their spirit and shorten their life.”

7th century Tang Dynasty-Taoist Chang Ting (Tung Hsuan)

The ancient Chinese regarded sexual relations as a crucial part not only of satisfying the mutual desires between man and woman but also as THE therapeutic arts for physical culvitation. Together with breathing excercises, dietetic recommendations and physical cultivation sexual intercourse was described as one of the essential methods for “nurturing life” (Yang Sheng). The “intra chamber” literature was one of the four divisions of medical literature of the first century BC catalogue of the royal Han dynasty library.

In our modern world sexuality still is the field of our greatest joy and deepest sorrow – depending on culture, religion, personal experiences and upbringing.  We have emphasized the potential danger of unleashing the sex drive: disease, exploitation, unwanted pregnancies, broken families and crimes, such as rape, incest or pedophilia. But by connecting to the knowlegde of the medicine we practice, we can help ourselves and our patients to (re-)discover the beauty, sacredness and fundamental joy within sexual relationships.
